Aloha, Dear Thea!
It's not surprising that your NovaDreamer began beeping prior to your falling asleep. Remember the ND isn't detecting dreaming per se, it's designed to notice eye movement. And when there's sufficient eye movement for a sufficient length of time (based on the sensitivity setting), then it concludes you are likely to be dreaming and delivers the pre-selected cue.
In the situation you've described, since there was no delay set, it was just catching the eye twitches that are common for us all as we drift off to sleep. In fact, that's exactly why the delay option is built in -- so that we can get to sleep without being interrupted by cue delivery, be it in the form of beeps or flashes (or both). Does this clarify?
Wishing you warm and fantastically furry dreams! Keelin
Hi, Keelin. I can't remember the name of the book, but it was a book about dreams and dream experimentation. It stated that one of the subjects was blind, I think it was Ray Charles or someone like that. The experimenter discovered no eye movements in the blind subject, and was only able to discern that he was capable of dreaming by EEG brain patterns. Anyone ever read this book? Anyhoo, I thought that the same would be my lot, particularly as I have two prosthetic eyes and don't use my eyes for anything in waking life. But I guess they do move on some level, during REM, because I certainly get ND beep-cues.
